One of the earliest images
of the first MERCENARY volume. Although I used to paint pages completely
in oils, I tried an experiment here: cutting out the foregrounds with a
thin ball-point pen line. Yet it was discarded soon. |
|
Cover I made for the
magazine where THE MERCENARY was published in Spain. It belongs to the second
volume in which the character changed his suit of armour. Afterwards I realised
that the armour was not quite operative and removed some pieces of the shoulders. |

|
Study of the character
and his flying dragon which never materialised. It was also an experiment
with blue hues, so characteristic of my uncle José Segrelles but
that I rarely use. Finally I employed this work as a syndication cover for
publishers interested in fantasy subjects. |
|
In a cover without order,
as this one, you can do what you want with no fear of art directors' opinions.
Although this was a guesswork, looking for THE MERCENARY's personality,
it became a successful poster and perhaps the most representative in the
series. |

|
Syndication cover without
order. It was painted in THE MERCENARY period, when I still alternate covers
and comics. The delicate princess who appeared in the great Monty Python's
movie 'Jabberwocky' inspired me in order to make the girl. |
|
Cover and backcover of
the third MERCENARY volume. All you can see here was made from memory except
the girl, for which I used a model. Some fans may still have the first version
where the character was from behind. |
